Bio

RENNIE FOSTER - Tokyo/ Vancouver

Rebirth / Dirty Works / Subject Detroit / Klik Recordings

With a bounty of vinyl and digital single releases, 2 full length albums and remixes for artists such as Swayzak, Orlando Voorn, John Beltran, DJ 3000, DJ Bone, Jaun Atkins, Gerald Mitchell (Underground Resistance), NuFrequency etc. Rennie Foster has established himself over the past decade as one of the most recognizable Canadian names in underground dance music.

He has worked with legendary House and Techno labels such as F-Communications, Soiree, Teknotika, Synewave NYC, Monoid, IngomA, Motech and Subject Detroit amongst many others and is championed as a true groundbreaker by industry legends like Derrick May, Laurent Garnier and Sasha.

His 2010 album “Blood Sugar” on leading Italian label Rebirth features the monster club hit “Devil’s Water” that has been officially remixed by such artists as James Zabiela, The Youngsters, Dave Dresden (of Gabriel and Dresden) and Kiki as well as licensed and charted by DJs like James Holden, Danny Tenaglia, Ben Watt (Everything but the Girl), Dave Seaman and Pete Tong. Notable licenses include appearances of Rennie's tracks on recent compilation CDs by Kevin Saunderson, Derrick May and Trentmoller.

"Devil's Water" is considered by many to be one of the top tracks of 2008/2009 and has been bootlegged by hundreds of remixers across a very wide variety of genres. The song crossed over many genre barriers and was recognized and embraced worldwide as an absolute anthem in many subcultures and scenes. Countless high profile DJs such as Sascha, Pete Tong and James Holden heavily championed the track. It only takes a quick search on youtube or google to see how "Devil's Water" will go down in dance music history as one of this era's defining songs.

The album "Blood Sugar" also features collaborations with hip-hop artist Moka Only of Swollen Members fame, and the recently departed Detroit house music legend Aaron Carl. Remixes of this album were released April 2011 featuring Samuel L. Session, Uner, members of Cobblestone Jazz, Jay Shepheard, Iron Curtis and Alain Ho amongst others. The Samuel Session remix of “Connect Like Four” quickly became the most charted track on Resident Advisor for April and made several other significant charts and playlists. The second single from the album, "Savior" was a Beatport "must hear Tech-House" track and was remixed by Coyu and Edu Imbernon.

Rennie is currently running the digital imprint “Dirty Works” featuring artists such as Kaito (Hiroshi Watanabe) and former Trapez artist Shane Berry alongside remixers such as Mark Broom, Jamie Anderson and Raudive. Currently Rennie is working with many labels including Greta Cottage Workshop UK, Thoughtless, Canada and Klik Records, Greece, as well as continuing to release on Rebirth and others. The new Rennie Foster EP "Floatilla" will be released 2012 on Klik Records in collaboration with Wordandsound, Berlin.

Rennie recently returned to Canada after living in Tokyo, Japan for 7 years where he reached LOUD Magazine’s top 50 DJs in Japan ranking 3 years in a row, peaking at #22 on a list that includes icons such as Towa Tei, Kentaro and Mondo Grosso. It was a rare event for a foreigner and the source of much attention in Japan. He released several Japan Only productions, including the CD “Soul Music for the Damned” that first introduced the “Devil’s Water” phenomenon.

Rennie has also toured extensively playing all over Japan, Europe, especially France and Belgium, as well as New York City. Rennie Foster is a former DMC judge, an active member of the Universal Zulu Nation. Previously a member of the Serato Scratch Liv/ RANE Japan pro-team, Rennie is currently sponsored by Vestax for the TR-1 controller and Oyaide cables.

Rennie has received favourable press in Mixmag, DJ Magazine, Mixer, XLR8R, URB, Freeze (Greece), Trax (France), LOUD, Floor, Remix, Club Juice, Posivision (Japan) and many other high profile publications world wide. As well as maintaining a prolific role in the dance music industry, Rennie raises twin daughters on his own as a dedicated full-time single father.

Rennie Foster’s production sound is original, emotive and powerful exploring territory from deep house to high power techno and everything in between, always full of surprises. Rennie's philosophy as a DJ is to communicate with the floor to create a "collaborative experience". Learning directly from mentors such as Laurent Garnier and Derrick May. Rennie takes a very unique approach to programming and tends to cover a wide musical territory during extended sets covering the most cutting edge sounds, timeless classics and original works. A true original.
